Three Remodels, Three Fates — Mogami, the Most Legendary Cruiser of the Japanese Navy

The life of the Mogami is a microcosm of Japanese naval engineering history: she was launched as a heavy cruiser, was struck by friendly fire and bombed by the U.S. during the Battle of Midway, nearly sinking — yet miraculously returned to port for repairs. During this major overhaul, she underwent her most dramatic transformation: her rear turrets were removed, and she was converted into an aviation cruiser capable of carrying 11 seaplanes. This hybrid "cruiser + carrier" design was unique in the entire history of WWII.

In October 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, after the night battle in Surigao Strait, Mogami was attacked by U.S. aircraft and eventually scuttled by the Japanese — her legend came to an end.

This 1:350 precision handmade model faithfully reproduces Mogami in her post-conversion aviation cruiser state: the rear deck seaplane platform, catapult track, detailed superstructure, and hand-painted IJN gray paint — every detail faithfully captures the historical look of this unique warship.
